Bangor City Ladies had their first match of the year away against feisty Blaenau Ffestiniog. Bangor haven’t had a match since the end of November and so knew this game was going to be tough. Blaenau had a very strong midfield with some very skilful and quick players, who immediately put Bangor under pressure. Bangor struggled to keep up with the speed of the onslaught and after only 10 minutes, Ffestiniog took the lead with a fantastic strike from the top of the Bangor D.
Bangor struggled for the remaining 25 minutes of the first half and Ffestiniog soon made it 2-0. After a rousing half time talk from captain Katie Williams and a change of tactics, Bangor seemed more fired up in the second half. They were able to create chances and had some good shots on goal due to some diligent work in midfield from Amanda Smith. The Bangor defence were able to deal with the Ffestiniog attack with some great covering play from Miffy Wilson and Lauren Hassett allowing Helen Glanville to deftly sweep up any breaks from the Ffestiniog attackers. Bangor were rewarded for their efforts by gaining a penalty corner. Rhian Culley injected to Amanda Smith at the top of the D, who neatly sipped it inside to Ffion Roberts who retained her composure before firing the ball straight into the back of the goal.
Despite Bangor’s perseverance they were unable to get another goal back, but some great defence from Bangor, included a great stop on the line by Miffy Wilson meant the final score was 2-1 to Ffestiniog. Amanda Smith was awarded the players player of the match for her fantastic and tireless efforts in midfield.
